Canada’s ambassador to Ireland, Kevin Vickers, received plenty of international media coverage this week when he defused a potentially threatening situation by tackling an agitator bent on provoking a disruption at a remembrance ceremony in Dublin for British soldiers killed during the Easter Rising of 1916.
Reaction to the ambassador’s action has been mixed. Some have praised Vickers for jumping in when the man left his seat and headed toward the guard of honour shouting and brandishing a document. Others have criticized Vickers for interfering in a matter that should have been left to the Irish authorities to deal with. I think Vickers did the right thing.
